Static control is the common term used for the implementation of measures to lessen the effects of electrostatic discharge. Static electricity is caused when there is an imbalance between non-conductive insulators of electricity, such as plastics, becoming negatively or positively charged.

There are number of basic rules that need to be followed for static control in the workplace. All static sensitive components should only be used in an Electrostatic Protective Area (EPA). At a bare minimum, an Electrostatic Protective Area should consist of a bench mat or static dissipative bench top and wrist strap ground cord.

The transportation of all static sensitive components should also only be moved in a static shielding container. Degraded or softened devices can often be the weak link in electric static control as this is an area known to reduce the effectiveness of many in-house measures.
