The growing market for consumer electrical goods is likely to increase global demand for electrical connectors in the coming years.
However, a new report from Global Industry Analysts suggests that developments in technology and a marked increase in the production of miniaturized microprocessors, as well as the increased use of mobile devices are going to lead to a recovery and growth of the industry in the coming years.
Areas where demand remains likely to remain strong is in the military sector. A recent report from Bishop and Associates found that on average, over the last five years, governments worldwide have consistently spent 2.7% of their gross domestic product on military expenditures.
Demand for cable connectors – which are needed to connect cables together – are expected to rise. As a whole, analysts expect the worldwide market for military/aerospace cable assemblies market to grow by approximately 2% in 2011, to a total value of $12.9 billion.
What to Look For When Choosing a Connector
There are a number of things to consider when choosing the right connectors. Things to bear in mind include the low resistance value of the connector, as well as high insulation value. You may also want the connector to meet specific conditions, too, so that it can, for example, withstand high vibrations.
Reliability is of course a massive consideration to bear in mind, as well as easy identification (very important when working on complex electrical circuits and systems), how easy it can be connected to other devices and of course price.
Another point that is increasingly important to bear in mind are compliance issues. The European Union’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) mean that electrical components need to meet stringent environmental and safety standards. Always bear this in mind when choosing connectors.
