UK electronics receives boost from leading industry figure

23 11 2011

A leading figure within the electronics manufacturing industry has suggested that, contrary to a number of recent reports, the sector is in ‘pretty good shape.’

Phil Inness, Chairman of the Electronic Manufacturing Services Association (EMSA), feels that the UK contract electronics market is probably worth approximately £1.4 billion a year.

“The market is in pretty good shape and is certainly growing in excess of 5% a year,” claimed Inness.

One particular reason for this might be the demand which continues to be generated by the aerospace sector.

A recent report suggests that aerospace remains one of the most important manufacturing sectors for the entire UK electronics industry.

Mark Prisk, the minister for business, has reiterated the importance of the aerospace sector, particularly in terms of the supply and manufacture of components.

“Aerospace companies in the UK directly employ around 100,000 highly skilled individuals and support many more jobs across the wider UK economy,” stated Prisk.

“We are number one in Europe and number two in the world, with a 17% global market share,” continued Prisk, speaking at the first meeting of the Aerospace Growth Partnership.

Manufacturing contributes approximately 18% of the UK’s GDP, with aerospace being one of the main reasons for this.

The sector’s annual turnover is rated at approximately £22 billion, with export business accounting for 70% of that turnover.

Figures like this emphasis the link between the importance of a flourishing aerospace sector and the UK electronics industry.

Antistatic: Flooring, Mats, Chairs and Shoes

31 10 2011

Anybody working in the electronics manufacturing industry can easily become charged with static electricity, and it is important to control this in order to prevent it from transferring from one application to another which could damage them or cause them to work incorrectly.

Antistatic flooring is typically used by workers who use electrical applications likely to be affected by discharged electricity.

The static from the person involved is grounded in the mat due to its specific materials.

Chairs, Mats & Shoes

There can be some antistatic mats which not only act as static control; they also allow workers to stand comfortably for long periods of time.  These are termed ant-fatigue mats and can come with or without the static control features.

They are made with durable rubber, and ones created by 3M consist of a matrix of hollow cylinders that function like a spring when compressed.

There are also static-free chairs available on the market, which are designed to eliminate the problems caused by combining conductive materials.  These are manufactured with hooded static-free casters, and static-free fabric.

In addition to antistatic mats and antistatic chairs, there are also antistatic shoes available for workers working with static electricity.

ESD shoes are able to ground the electrostatic discharge from a person as long as they are worn on a semi-conductive floor.  The shoes discharge the static electricity stored in a human body through the floor in a more controlled way.

A-Z of electrical components – Fans

18 10 2011

The principal aim of an axial fan is to provide a sustainable cooling solution. Due to the versatility of the product though, this can translate to a ceiling fan within a household as well as a large piece of machinery in a busy industrial factory.

Different customers require axial fans for different functions.  Those who wish a fan to be used in the home for example, may require the fan to produce minimal noise.

For those working within a factory this may not be an issue of any real consequence.

ebm-papst is a well known axial fan manufacturer, renowned for producing high quality, energy efficient products.

Ceiling fans, table fans, compact fans, computer cooling fans, motor vehicle cooling fans can all be axial fans, depending on the manufacturer.

Fans in vehicles such as cars usually prevent the car from overheating by discarding hot air produced by the combustion in the engine.

The same thing applies to computers, where a fan is encompassed into the design of the product to prevent it from overheating.

How do they work?

The blades within axial fans force the air to a shaft in a parallel direction. The air is then blown along the axis of the fan to produce a continuous flow of air.

The cooling intensity of the fan depends on how quickly the blades move, or are set to move.

Some axial fans are used in air conditioning applications, both for consumer purposes, and within the electronics manufacturing industry.

Axial fans come in a variety of sizes to accommodate all these different settings. However, standard diameters for axial fans range from 300-400 mm and 1800-2000 mm.
