Static Control and Electro Static Discharge (ESD)

24 11 2010

Electro Static Discharge (ESD) and static control are essential factors in any industry where electrical products are in use. Find out how ways to control electrostatic discharge, static control products and more.

What is Static Control?

Static control is the common term used for the implementation of measures to lessen the effects of electrostatic discharge. Static electricity is, simply put, electricity at rest. Static electricity is caused when there is an imbalance between non-conductive insulators of electricity, such as plastics, becoming negatively or positively charged.

Copper does not gain or lose electrons so is ideal for the use of conducting electricity. Plastic is generally a poor conductor so it is relatively easy for it to charge with friction or heat, for example.

Ways to Implement Static Control

There are a number of active and passive ways in which companies can implement static control within the electronics industry. Popular methods include removing or neutralizing static electricity via induction, as well as ensuring that all electrics and machinery used are well grounded to help lessen the risk of high electrical charges.

Another solution to static control is ionization. This is an active process that will do a lot to control static electricity. Static neutralizer equipment or static eliminators as they are often referred are essentially ionizing machines that produce positive and negative charges to avoid encountering problems with static electricity.

Static Control Solutions in the UK

One of the leading static control solutions providers in the UK is 3M, who provide a comprehensive range of solutions for the electronics market in the UK and Ireland. The company develops and markets approximately 55,000 products worldwide and the 3M range of products in the static control field includes: personnel grounding, workstation kits and equipment, packaging materials, cleaning, storage, flooring and testers.

Authorised Static Survey Consultants

Your electro static discharge (ESD) management program cannot be truly effective unless your employees understand their role in the process, which is why static training and auditing should be at the forefront of any manufacturer of electrical equipment.
Challenger Components technical personnel can provide training, provide pre-audit assessment of your system, or help you set up a new program for your facility.
