The power of antistatic products

30 11 2011

It is a necessity to buy anti static products for many companies within the manufacturing industry, especially when your work is related to the field of electronics. Such products are significant in protecting both you and the electronic components from the so-called ‘static charge build-up.’

Such build-up of electric charge on the surface of an object, known as the static electricity, can damage electronic components beyond repair. This is the reason why this should not be taken for granted—hence, it is really important to grab the following anti static products;

Anti Static Mat: This product is particularly useful for reducing the chance of getting in contact with static. The anti static mat is put beneath the components or the person working on them. This is to ensure the safety for the electronics and to avoid static shocks, especially when surrounded by electronic devices.

Anti Static Bags: When you need to ship or move electronic components, such as memory sticks, hard drives and sound cards, the use of anti static bags is important. This anti static product is use to deflect the natural static electricity which are usually built up during the journey.

Anti Static Clothing: As its name implies, it is utilised to protect the person working on the electronic devices and the devices themselves from the static electrical charges.

Ankle and Heel Straps: These can also be used to help protect users from currents and allow accumulated charge to seep away from the body.

These items work in an equally intricate way, dissipating electrical charge to specially implanted floor tiles to increase protection. They are particularly good for anyone who needs to be mobile when working as it is preferable to avoid a grounding cable in this cable.

Why use military connectors?

25 11 2011

Do you need reliable and efficient electronic connectors that can withstand any type of harsh environment? Military connectors are connectors which are specifically designed for military use. These connectors are used in a variety of ways by trained professionals within the military sector.

Connectors used by the military are described in two types of formats which include the MIL-C-26482 and the MIL-DTL-26482 formats. Of the two, the latter is the most current type. These two types of connectors offer complete protection against fluid and dust. Many circular pins come with these types of connectors. Industrial Ethernet also utilizes the same kind of technology.

There is an increasing demand for reliable connectors with military type performance specification and accuracy. Such industrial applications include control equipment used in nuclear power generation facilities and banking and security systems among others. These facilities also require the same reliability and performance as any military facilities. Electronic data from these industrial facilities also require optimum protection which military connectors can provide.

Connectors with military specifications are expected to withstand high impact shock, corrosion, and extreme changing temperatures. Materials for these types of connectors may include metal and composite among others. Because of the ability of these connectors to withstand environmental abuse, the usage extends not only for military use but also in communication, aviation, traffic control, and geophysical applications. Moreover, more and more rail transportation companies and vehicles utilise the efficiency, reliability, and durability of military connectors.

If you are worried about moisture, vibration, and changes in pressure, the use of connectors with military specifications could be the answer. These types of connectors come in different types and sizes which include the miniature size, sub-miniature size, and micro size connectors.

Install rugged, lightweight, and compact connectors made with military quality specifications for any type of industrial application. This is what you need if you want your connectors to withstand challenging conditions.

UK electronics receives boost from leading industry figure

23 11 2011

A leading figure within the electronics manufacturing industry has suggested that, contrary to a number of recent reports, the sector is in ‘pretty good shape.’

Phil Inness, Chairman of the Electronic Manufacturing Services Association (EMSA), feels that the UK contract electronics market is probably worth approximately £1.4 billion a year.

“The market is in pretty good shape and is certainly growing in excess of 5% a year,” claimed Inness.

One particular reason for this might be the demand which continues to be generated by the aerospace sector.

A recent report suggests that aerospace remains one of the most important manufacturing sectors for the entire UK electronics industry.

Mark Prisk, the minister for business, has reiterated the importance of the aerospace sector, particularly in terms of the supply and manufacture of components.

“Aerospace companies in the UK directly employ around 100,000 highly skilled individuals and support many more jobs across the wider UK economy,” stated Prisk.

“We are number one in Europe and number two in the world, with a 17% global market share,” continued Prisk, speaking at the first meeting of the Aerospace Growth Partnership.

Manufacturing contributes approximately 18% of the UK’s GDP, with aerospace being one of the main reasons for this.

The sector’s annual turnover is rated at approximately £22 billion, with export business accounting for 70% of that turnover.

Figures like this emphasis the link between the importance of a flourishing aerospace sector and the UK electronics industry.

A-Z of electrical components – H: Heat sinks

16 11 2011

The heat generated by complex devices and circuitry can often threaten the reliability of a product and, in some cases, tamper with the ability of a device to function correctly.

With this in mind, heat sinks have become an essential part of modern electronics manufacturing.

They are used to reduce and control the temperature of items such as microprocessors through sophisticated heat dissipation techniques.

They are basically made up of a small metal structure which includes flat surfaces to ensure good thermal contact with the components that need to be cooled.

A heat sink absorbs and dissipates heat from another object using thermal contact. They are used in a vast range of applications which could include anything that requires efficient and effective protection from heat.

How are heat sinks used?

Within the electronics industry, they are used most frequently for the cooling of electronic devices. Complex circuitry and devices require protection from the extreme generation of heat, otherwise they cannot perform the tasks for which they were designed.

Heat sinks are often used while soldering circuit boards, helping to prevent excessive heat from damaging the complex electronic aspects.

For example, electrical components such as magnetic reed switches can malfunction if exposed to higher powered soldering irons.

Some modern electronic devices can withstand high temperatures because of their specific design, but if there is a doubt over it then heat sinks are an essential tool.

Military connector emphasis placed on keeping it light and simple

13 09 2011

There has been a great deal of discussion lately about the important link between the electronics manufacturing sector and the military within the UK.

Plans by the British government to significantly cut the budget of the UK manufacturing sector were greeted with criticism.

The importance of the link between both sectors seems to have been acknowledged though, as previous plans to cut the UK defence budget by 15% over the next four years have now been reduced to 8%.

It now appears as though the link can be defined even more though. Leading industry experts are suggesting the emphasis is being placed on the soldier on the ground and the vehicle they use in terms of developments within electronic manufacturing.

It is clear that component manufacturers play a vital role in developing products that can enhance the UK military while being as light and easy to carry as possible.

Military Connectors are a good example of this.

The devices carried by a soldier or on a vehicle need to be interconnected and powered from a common source if possible.

Miniaturised connectors need the same performance and standards as their larger military-standard counterparts, but reducing the size can also affect performance.

Product design and development is therefore focusing on high-density terminations offered by lightweight military connector systems.

One of the most important areas of development focus is the thickness of the metal connector shell and the search for new alloys and materials to produce rugged yet lightweight construction.

Soldiers on the ground are reliant on using devices and equipment which, although complex in their construction, are easy to operate and transport.

Component manufacturers, such as Amphenol, who are involved in creating such products should be commended for matching the functions of the devices to the specific needs of the soldiers in their natural environment.
